Rakhi is a very important festival for people from Indian origin and this is a significant occasion that defines the culture of people from India. But with time the festival has grown into a bigger one. People who are residing in foreign lands due to professional commitments have to live with a heavy heart if they are not attending home on this festival.

I know how that feels when all the known relatives, friends and loved ones are thronging in your home courtyard and you are left alone in some distant land. But in this era of immense online shopping, you have a reason to feel a bit better by sending online rakhi to India.

When I came here in UAE, I never thought to live here for so long because it was just the start of a new phase of my life. I was excited more because there was a call of the unknown and to explore a foreign land. But with time I started missing the sight of the vapors from teapot, the swing under the banyan tree where me and my sister have left stories to ponder on, the pond where so many lazy afternoons were spent, the terrace from where pickles were stolen, the school bell whose sound filled our hearts with adventure, the temple behind which some of our secret things were hidden, and a lot more friends who were part of my growing age. I miss them dearly every day. The time when I shifted here, I hardly talked for 5 minutes with family, especially my mom and sister. But now, luckily enough with the technological revolution, me and my sister end up spending time just like the childhood days. Mom shows me her new kitchen and equipment. But with every Skype call, there is a quench in my heart (also my sisters and mom’s heart) “When will I go home?” Managing a holiday is a bit tough and I cannot attend every festival back home.

So, this year also my sister would be selecting some wonderful gifts to be sent along with rakhi online. And again I will tie that rakhi around my wrist while she is on the video call so that she can see her handsome brother adorning the best rakhi. And silently she would pray to God “Please keep my brother safe and send him home asap”. And she doesn’t know I would also be wishing the same wish.
