Ingredients:

  • Yoghurt: Get two different yoghurts – Greek yoghurt for the batter and 2% fat content yoghurt for the frosting. 
  • Sweetener: You can use any type of liquid syrup, be it maple syrup or honey, depending on your taste preferences. 
  • Flour – Use whole wheat or spelt flour
  • Cacao Powder or Cocoa Powder: Cacao powder is the processed version of cocoa powder. You can use any one of them for the best results.
  • Baking essentials: Baking powder, baking soda, salt, vanilla extract

How to make a healthy chocolate cake?

  • Cover the bottom of a cake pan with parchment paper and spray cooking spray covering the sides. 
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Take a large mixing bowl, add eggs and maple syrup. Beat the liquid and gradually add yoghurt, baking powder, baking soda, salt and vanilla extract. Beat with a mixer for a perfect blend. 
  • Add cocoa or cacao powder and whisk the mixture properly. Gradually, add flour and whisk again for a smooth blend. Do not over mix the batter; maintain the consistency.
  • Pour the batter in the previously prepared pan evenly and bake on the bottom rack. (Avg time – 27 minutes)
  • Bake until the toothpick comes out clean from the centre.
  • While your cake is baking, prepare the frosting. Add yoghurt, cocoa or cacao powder, vanilla extract and maple syrup in a large bowl. Whisk the ingredients well for a smoother consistency. 
  • Remove the cake from the oven and let them cool for 10-15 minutes. 
  • Use a spatula to separate the cake’s edges from the pan and flip the cake in your hand. 
  • Slowly remove the parchment paper and place the cake on the cooling rack. Let the cake cool off before frosting.
  • Cut the cake into two halves evenly with a fillet knife along its length.
  • Place the bottom layer and put some frosting on the cake. Place the other half over the frosting and spread the frosting over the top layer. Use extra frosting on the lower layer for a more decadent cake.
  • Your birthday cake is ready. Freeze the cake for some time for the best taste.
