When is Onam?

Onam is one of the most loved festivals in Kerala celebrated by Hindus, especially the Malayali community. It is a festival of homecoming and harvest celebrated on a stretch of 10 days. According to the Malayalam calendar - Kollavarsham, Onam falls in the month of Chingam (the first month), which overlaps with August and September. Onam 2021 will be celebrated from August 12 to August 23, 2021. However, Thiruvonam or the sacred Onam day falls on August 21, 2021 Friday.  It is a festival to welcome King Mahabali and commemorate the Vamana Avatar of Vishnu. The first day of the Onam commences on Atham Star and the tenth day concludes with Thiruvonam Star. Thiru Onam or Thiruvonam is the most auspicious day during the 10-days long festival of Onam. People indulge in various activities like cultural shows, feasting, decoration, gifting and traditional plays to indulge in the festivity with joy and enthusiasm. Additionally, the snake boat race and tiger play are two of the most competitive and exciting highlights of this festival.
